Government decided to provide 27% reservation for OBC, 10% for EWS in MBBS & PG medical courses

The Government of India on Thursday i.e. 29 July, 2021 decided to offer 27% reservation for Other Backward Class (OBC) and 10% for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) under All India Quota (AIQ) scheme for Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate medical/dental courses (MBBS/MD/MSD/Diploma/BDS/MDS) from current academic year 2021-22 ownwards.

This decision was taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a meeting held on July 26, said the health ministry in a statement. Calling this decision "Landmark", he said that this will immensely help thousands of our youth every year get better opportunities and create a new paradigm of social justice in our country.

This decision would benefit every year  nearly 1,500 OBC students in MBBS and 2500 OBC students in post-graduation also around 550 EWS students in MBBS and approximately 1,000 EWS students in post-graduation.

What was the reservation policy so far?

Until 2007, no reservation was implemented within the AIQ for medical admission. On January 31, 2007, in Abhay Nath V. University of Delhi and Others, the Supreme Court OF India directed that reservation of 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST be introduced in the AIQ.

Then the Government of India passed the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2007 providing for 27% reservation to OBC students in Central Government institutions. While State Government medical and dental colleges provide reservation to OBCs in seats outside the AIQ, this benefit was so far not extended to seats allocated under the AIQ in these state colleges. The 10% EWS quota under the Constitution (One Hundred And Third Amendment) Act, 2019, too, has been implemented in central educational Institutions, but not in the NEET AIQ for state institutions.
