Janmashtami, also known as Shri Krishna's Birthday or Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtmi, is a yearly Hindu festival that marks the birth of Lord Shri Krishna. Janmashtami is the most awaited festival for the devotees of Lord Shree Krishna celebrated all over the world. Devotees celebrate this day by fasting, praying together, visiting temples, preparing and sharing special food.


Lord Krishna is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the speaker of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. Krishna was born into the Yadava family of Mathura to Queen Devaki and her spouse, King Vasudeva. Shri Krishna grew up in Gokul, with Nanda Baba and his wife Yashoda. Despite being foster parents bondage between them was extremely Powerful.

Janmashtami Date

Devotees celebrate Janmashtami or Shri Krishna’s birthday on the Ashtami date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month or the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada. Since  Shri Krishna was born at midnight, the puja for him is performed in Nishita Kaal. According to our Hindu calendar, this year Shri Krishna’s birthday will be between 11:59 PM on August 30 to 12:44 AM on August 31.

On this special day, devotees perform various customs to make their idol happy and one of the most prestigious customs is reading the Bhagavad Gita. Devotees also rock the cradle with an idol of young Krishna. Many ceremonies are held starting from midnight and it goes on till dawn because Lord Shri Krishna was born at the stroke of midnight.
