India sets a record with over 2.5 crore COVID-19 vaccine shots in a single day

Today, on 17 September 2021, India has set a record by administering over 2.5 crore COVID-19 vaccine shots by midnight which makes it the highest single-day vaccination tally so far.

India is the first country in the world to administer 2.5 Crore+ COVID vaccines in one day.

In India, the vaccination program started on 16 January 2021, operating 3006 vaccination centers on the onset. A total of 79.33 Crores vaccinations have been delivered to date.

According to Health Ministry, 20% of India's adult population which means 19.75 Crores of people have been fully vaccinated and 62% of India's population which means 59.57 Crores of people have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

The World Health Organization's (WHO) South-East Asia Regional Office has also congratulated India for achieving the milestone.

Narendra Modi said, "Every Indian would be proud of today's record vaccination numbers. I acknowledge our doctors, innovators, administrators, nurses, healthcare and all front-line workers who have toiled to make the vaccination drive a success. Let us keep boosting vaccination to defeat COVID-19."
A senior government official explained that the Ministry is in ongoing talks with foreign vaccine manufacturers (Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson and Johnson) on the issue to bring more vaccines into the Indian market.

He said, "We are getting different types of demands from the manufacturers at different times which is one of the reasons why indemnity hasn't been granted to Pfizer and Moderna so far and thus resulting in a delay in the arrival of foreign-made vaccines in India."
