Facebook Goes Meta: Why Mark Zuckerberg Rebrands Company Name?

Tech giant Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that his company is rebranding itself as Meta in an attempt to encompass its virtual-reality insight for the future, what Mark Zuckerberg describes as the “Metaverse.”

Speaking at the Facebook Connect conference, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, said that the company will now be called Meta. Meta or Meta-verse is a future concept where people will be able to build virtual avatars, communicate in virtual spaces, and there will even be commerce and transactions within the virtual space.

"Right now, our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can't possibly represent everything that we're doing today, let alone in the future," Mr. Zuckerberg added. According to the tech giant, the change would bring together its different social media applications and technologies under a new brand name. It said that it wouldn't change its corporate structure. The names of the apps that it builds-Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp—will remain the same.

The company also unveiled new augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) products. It said it would this year launch a way for developers and creators to join in this journey, and use these products to create apps for the metaverse.

The company revealed a new logo at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, on Thursday, replacing its F-shaped logo with a blue infinity-shaped one. Zuckerberg said he expects the metaverse to reach a billion people within the next decade.
