Sialkot: Sri Lankan man lynched by mob and burnt alive

A Sri Lankan man was tortured and burnt to death by a mob in Pakistan's Sialkot. Chief Minister of Punjab (Pakistan) Usman Buzdar said the incident was "very tragic".

As per reports, Punjab police IG Rao Sardar Ali Khan took notice of the incident and sent Gujranwala regional police officer to the location immediately.

The incident took place in Sialkot's Wazirabad road, where workers of private factories attacked the export manager of a factory and burnt his body after killing him.

The Sri Lankan man was identified as Priyantha Kumara. He was in his 40s and was an export manager at a private factory. He allegedly tore a poster of the hardline Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) with Quranic verses inscribed in it and threw it in the dustbin.

The official said, "Mr. Kumara allegedly tore a poster of the hardline Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) in which Quranic verses were inscribed and threw it in the dustbin. The poster of the Islamist party was pasted on the wall adjoining the office of Kumara. A couple of factory workers saw him removing the poster and spread the word in the factory".

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said, "The horrific vigilante attack on factory in Sialkot & the burning alive of Sri Lankan manager is a day of shame for Pakistan. I am overseeing the investigations & let there be no mistake all those responsible will be punished with full severity of the law. Arrests are in progress".

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has summoned a report from the IG and ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter. The spokesperson of the Sialkot police said that the details would be shared with the media after the initial investigation.

A similar incident was reported from Sialkot in 2010, where a mob had lynched two brothers in the presence of police, declaring them dacoits.

A man named Farhan Idrees has been arrested by the Punjab (Pakistan) police as one of the main accused in the incident. More than 100 people have been arrested.
